Camping in Diamond Fork

Spring is in full bloom here in Utah Valley, and the weather is hard to beat right now. With graduation festivities underway in Provo, bringing way too many extra cars and bodies to this already overpopulated little town, we decided to take advantage of the weather in a big way with a spontaneous camping trip on Friday. Since most of the Wasatch Front is still covered in snow, real mountain camping was a no-go, so we headed just a few miles south to Spanish Fork, UT and Diamond Campground up Diamond Fork Canyon. We picked a walk-in campsite at the very back of the campground; it was relatively secluded and right on the banks of a pretty stream that promised to soothe us to sleep when nighttime came.

After setting up camp, we wandered around for a while, checking out the stream and spotting lots of critter tracks along the way.

Soon, it was high time for dinner, so Drew built a fire - with a single match, mind you - and we tossed in our tinfoil dinners. Ground turkey, potatoes, carrots, celery, and onions, plus some Worcestershire sauce and spices. Unexpectedly delicious.

After dinner, we headed in the other direction, wandering down the Discovery Trail that meanders through the campground and along Diamond River. We found plenty of cool plants and spied many gangs of Boy Scouts, and then watched the sun set over the mountains.

As darkness started rolling in, we settled in by our fire pit for some whittling, sweet treats (what's a campout without marshmallows?), and a game of Phase 10.

Eventually, it was time to call it a day. We crawled into our tent, onto our air mattress, and under our sleeping bags and curled up against the cold. Although it was a really warm day, it was a really frigid night, so our sleep was a little restless. Plus, something about not having easy access to a bathroom just makes you have to go - badly - in the coldest, darkest, wee hours of the morning. Boo.

We survived the night and even got a few hours of good sleep, but I'm afraid the neighbor Boy Scouts woke us up before the sun did. Drew hopped up, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed and built a fire to lure me out from under the blankets in our tent. We had a great sunrise breakfast - eggs, peanut butter toast, bacon, strawberries, and a banana - good energy for another active day.

After breakfast, we played around and cleaned up while our tent dried in the sunshine. When everything was ready to go, we packed up our car, vacated our campsite, and headed up the canyon a little further to hike around Red Ledges. That's next!
