Giving Thanks
We've now had three days full of delicious food and loving family and friends. What lucky ducks we are.
On Wednesday, we hosted pie night in our apartment. Guests in attendance included Christie, Tyler, Topher, and Maddie (and the young'un currently growing Christie's belly), Lori, Ayla, and Shaquille, and Drew and I. We got started with some fruits and veggies and whole grains to balance the sugar overload planned for later. Then, Drew's parents, Chris and Annette, his grandparents, Katie and Joe, and his two younger sisters, Lisa and Katie Jo, joined in from afar via Skype.
After a rather rambunctious Skype session, we turned to pie, delicious pie. Easily one of the best parts of this lovely time of year. Christie brought perfect pecan and pumpkin pies; we supplied dutch apple and a mixed berry one with walnuts and brown sugar on top. Mmmmm.
After pie, it was bathtime for Maddie and Topher, necessitated by pumpkin and whipped cream in the ears and nose and bellybutton. Lori did the rather damp bathing honors. Then, we played a short game of Guesstures before everyone dispersed.
Thursday, we baked apple pie number two and a creamy batch of "perfect potatoes au gratin" (I'm not sure if they're perfect, but they were definitely yummy) and then traveled to Saratoga Springs to spend the afternoon with Drew's uncle Kevin and aunt Jan and their family. There were around 25 people there and enough food for 50. We ate until our stomachs hurt, played with Duke and the nameless pet snake, and thoroughly enjoyed each other's company.
Friday was a beautiful day; fall successfully supplanted winter for little while, providing a few hours of sunny warmth. A perfect day for a cookout in the canyon, right? Wrong. Later in the afternoon, winter clouds came rolling back in, bringing frigid weather with them. Christie, Tyler, Topher, and Maddie came down from Lehi and, determined, we still headed to Canyon Glen Park with plans to enjoy hot dogs, hot chocolate, frisbee, and football. A no-open-fire ban made everything even colder than we anticipated. After a few tosses of the frisbee, we hung around just long enough to eat and then headed home for movies and leftover pie.
It's easy in the hustle and bustle of baking and driving and cleaning and shopping to forget to stop for a moment and think about gratitude on Thanksgiving. Today I'm especially grateful for plentiful nutritious food and full bellies; for excellent educational opportunities; for bodily health and well-being; and for the love of family, near and far. We have so many things that so many people don't, and I'm so very thankful for them today and always.
Happy Thanksgiving!
