26

Another day. Another dollar. Another year older. Our birthdays fell on a Friday and a Monday this year, and I definitely got the short end of that stick, so I'm afraid this birthday wasn't all balloons and parties and royal treatment. In fact, most of the people I interacted with during the day were generally unaware that this day was just a little bit different for me than every other day of the year - it was just a little bit more mine than theirs. It was my birthday. To them, it was just another Monday Not-so-Funday.

Even though our birthdays were in most ways like any other Friday or Monday, we have a pretty great everyday, meaning, of course, that even the most uneventful of birthdays was really quite grand. We're lucky to have a lot of people in our lives that help us celebrate this life and each other every single day, birthday or not, and last weekend was no exception.

...On Friday, Aaron and Jaimie took us to Bombay House, which is right around the block from where we live, for delicious Indian food. Why had we never been there before? Seeing as we recently celebrated Aaron's birthday at Himalayan Kitchen in Salt Lake, I think we've stumbled upon a double date tradition in the making: birthday dinners at the finest Indian establishment we can afford. After stuffing ourselves silly with rice and naan, multiple varieties of spicy, saucy dishes, and a little mango ice cream, too, we went to see Silver Linings Playbook, which was smart and funny and displayed a lot of the raw, messy bits of life. I know I liked it, and I think everyone else did, too.

...You already know how we spent most of Saturday.

...On Sunday, we had a mutual birthday dinner, with a menu designed with both of us in mind: steak for Drew's tastebuds, twice-baked potatoes for mine, and cupcakes for both of us. Lori and Emily joined us for dinner, and Josh and Brittany stopped by just in time to enjoy dessert with us.

...To wrap up this birthday weekend, we had dinner at Olive Garden on Monday night, a treat sponsored from afar by Drew's lovely parents. It's funny how dinner out together - read: no dishes to do, no homework calling from the other room, no elephants for upstairs neighbors ruining our peace - really has become such a treat. Once upon a time, we saw each other frequently throughout the day and shared every meal, every day. Now, dinner is the one meal we get to eat together most days, so an extra special, uninterrupted one is just that - extra special.

Combined with phone calls and texts and cards and Facebook messages, oh-my, we were two loved and celebrated kids this week, although that term - kids - might be nearing its expiration date with us. 26 is, after all, a tad bit closer to 30 than to 20. Still, 20 is a part of us, while 30 is a year of life still waiting to coalesce from the land of possibility and all of the moments we'll have between now and then. So, for now, we're two lucky, 26-year-old kids, who had another great year of life and another great birthday celebration of it.
