Super Sleepover: Day One
Last weekend, Christie and Tyler had a Thompson-side-of-the-family event to attend in far-away Monticello, UT, so we were lucky enough to have Topher, Maddie, and Caroline all to ourselves for most of Friday and Saturday. Going from a life completely devoid of dependents - no kids, no pets, not even a house plant - to a weekend devoted to three little needy people was definitely both fun and educational, with a healthy dose of exhausting thrown in, too.
First things first: dinner. Macaroni and cheese and sausage was the dish du jour, selected for fear that they might not eat at all if dinner wasn't recognizable. Once upon a time, I tried - unintentionally, mind you - to expand their horizons with homemade chicken pot-pie, and that didn't go so well. Apparently, chicken pot-pie must look like a pie in their worlds. So, this time around, we stuck with something standard (and one of the first things I learned to "cook" as a wee one). We bought "pink soda" (aka pink lemonade) for Maddie the weekend before, but forgot to take it with us to Christie and Tyler's, so she had quite the treat waiting for her.
When bellies were full (whether we were actually nourished or not is debatable), we walked over to North Park, just a few blocks from our apartment. It was one of those rather unusual dreary, wet days in Utah - not really the best weather for playing outside, but get outside we must. It was already clear that our little apartment just couldn't contain the energies of all five of us all afternoon.
The windy, blustery weather provided plenty of crunchy leaves on the ground to collect, stomp, throw, and roll around in (and attempt to eat, for the likes of Caroline).
After we had seen most of the various corners of the park and were all sufficiently cold and tired, we headed home to make Halloween cupcakes. Topher and Maddie had been waiting all week for this, and Miss Caroline would have been glad to get in on the mixing, frosting, and tasting action if we had only obliged her. (Being the nice aunt and uncle we are, we did eventually give in to her moaning requests for a little bit of an unfrosted cupcake.)
After bedtime stories finally comes bedtime. Although we went to sleep around 8pm with everyone else, neither Drew nor I got much sleep that night. We slept so lightly, just waiting for one of the three little sleeping munchkins to cry or wet the bed or stop breathing... something. They were all just fine all night long, but you worry, ya know? Hopefully sleep comes more naturally when they're your own and you grow accustomed to their many nighttime sounds, but we'd hate for someone else's little angels to be harmed or traumatized on our watch. Luckily, no harm or trauma befell any of us in the course of the night, just a little sleeplessness, that's all.
Day one down. A much fuller and funner day two coming up next!

Spending so much time playing at the muddy park and partaking of sticky cupcakes meant that everyone needed a good, warm bath. And bathtime is, of course, followed by nearly endless bedtime stories.
