One Wet Weekend

The weather in Utah Valley lately has been, well, kind of horrible. And it's putting a literal damper on our Memorial Day weekend plans; no camping or hiking or picnics for us, not yet anyway. The skies have been all gray and cloudy, wintry chills in the air have returned, and the sun has vanished. We haven't actually gotten any rain, at least not enough to mention, but the sky has been threatening to let loose at any moment. I wish it would; then maybe these clouds would move on. [I complain, but our weather conditions are beans compared to the winds and rain pounding our homelands in the southeast thanks to Beryl, a particularly large tropical storm with a particularly bad name.]

All-around antsy for a day out, Lori, Ayla, Drew, and I met Christie, Topher, Maddie, and Caroline at the Lehi Rec Center on Saturday morning for some swimming. Indoor swimming, of course. With a big pool, many slides, a lazy river, and a hot tub, there was plenty of fun to be had. All that water + two nieces and a nephew = one serious aquatic workout. All three of them swam and slid and splashed their hearts out. I'm sure they were even more exhausted than we were at the end of it all; I know they were even more pruney.

We recuperated from this rather cold, rather tiring pool adventure on a rather dreary day with homemade creamy tomato basil soup and grilled garlic-tomato-spinach-cheese sandwiches, promptly followed by a 3-hour nap. When we finally woke up, we ventured out for Olive Garden (thanks to Etta's coupon-clipping) and Mirror, Mirror at the dollar theater. It was a very good, very full Saturday.

The weather wasn't much improved today, so our morning activities were strictly limited to the indoor variety (reading and sewing in front of Etta's gas fireplace). Later in the day, the sun started peeking its bright head through the clouds, inviting us outside for a much-needed afternoon stroll. We've been passing a yard of goats on our way home since we've been staying at Etta's, so we headed in their direction, hoping to see them up-close and personal. We weren't disappointed.

This guy looks either ridiculously fat or pregnant, but he/she's actually very healthy. Apparently, big gut = nice rumen = good fermentation = better food processing.

The flowers around here and their pollinators aren't complaining about the weather conditions. The shade and moisture over the past few days must have been good for them; they were abundant and beautiful on our walk.

I guess the weather hasn't really dampened our weekend after all.
