Halloween, One Week Early
Halloween arrived a week early for us, and I'm not complaining. After all, who would whine about an extra week of dressing up like your buried alter ego and having candy and cupcakes for dinner? Not us.
Friday night was our ward Halloween party at church, and, since we're lucky enough to be on the Activities Committee, we were much more involved in the whole shindig than we might have been if left to our own devices. With crazy busy weeks last week, costumes that could be primarily extracted from our closet were essential, so we selected these two fine people for inspiration:
The party was a Bunco tournament; we never actually played a round, but I learned how to play well enough to teach the game to everyone else. Aside from explaining Bunco rules to Frankenstein, Winnie the Pooh, and Wolverine and Rogue, we spent most of our time manning the drink station with Buzz and Jessie (aka Matt and Katherine), mixing up margarita, raspberry, and peach-flavored frozen drinks, sans alcohol, of course. Blenders + melting ice + colored corn syrup = a big ol' mess, but the drinks disappeared as fast as we could make them, so I guess it was worth it. Overall, the turnout was great, the game was a hit, and the costumes were fantastic, making for a really fun night.
Last night we got even further into the Halloween spirit with pumpkin carving at Aaron and Jaimie's. We started with a bunch of over-sized orange vegetables, some scoopers, and a selection of sharp tools, and before long, we had transformed those gourds into a pretty awesome collection of glowing jack-o-lanterns, if I do say so myself.
Monday is Aaron's birthday, so we combined our pumpkin carving party with birthday celebrations. Jaimie made a deliciously beautiful chocolate cake; add 25 candles, a birthday song, some presents, and a funny alien movie (Evolution), and you have a full-fledged birthday party on your hands.
This weekend has been an incredibly festive one, reminding us how bright life is when there are days and things and people to celebrate. Imagine how radiant our lives would be if we would find a reason to sing and dance and laugh every day.

We'll ignore the looming moral dilemmas associated with our costumes and focus on the fact that we had a lot of fun, spent maybe $12 (mostly on Drew's stylish sweatbands and a beach ball for the baby belly), and were way more comfortable than some of the other poor schmucks in stretchy polyester suits and itchy face paint.
