Why Life is Good Lately

Antsy for a change of scenery, some family time, and a vacation, it's easy for us to forget how good we have it right now, so here are 10 things that we're especially liking about our lives these days:

*We get to sleep in until 7:15am. We have a friend who works in Salt Lake City and has to be at work at 7am and that means getting up before 5:30am... Still, 7:15 is kind of early, and we are definitely looking forward to a few weeks with no alarm clock.

*We work really close to each other and our apartment, and we get to take advantage of that fact by going home every day to eat lunch together. Shared meals are kind of a priority for us, and we haven't missed many since we got married (or engaged, or since I moved to Utah...). The problem is that when you're home, filled with warm soup or a sandwich or cookies, nap-time generally follows lunch-time. It's sometimes painful to have to go back to work, but it's usually worth it for spending 20 or 30 minutes in pure comfort.

*Living most of our lives within 5 square miles also means we get to enjoy sharing a car. Parking is tricky in our complex (the spaces are tight and each apartment only has one assigned spot) and sometimes even trickier on campus; that, combined with high gas prices, makes our ability to rely on one car a definite blessing. Drew, for one reason or another, has been particularly happy to be in the car these days. Maybe he's preparing mentally for our 33-hour drive to the southeast in a few weeks, but I think it might have something to do with his uncanny ability to discover good music and our ownership of a cable that links his iPod to the car speakers. Lately, OneRepublic, Mumford and Sons, and Mr. Big have been playing pretty constantly in our car and apartment. (This video is pretty great, and the blonde guy reminds us of Xenophilius Lovegood.)

*Drew has a job where he gets to work with a lot of his friends. They pass the time by asking each other "would you rather..." questions. Here are some of his favorites: (Warning. They tend to be rather gross.) Would you rather eat a brick of boogers or a brick of scabs? Would you rather shave all the skin off your head and face with a cheese grater or chew through each elbow and knee? Would you rather have no arms and no legs (gone from the hips and shoulders) or have no genitals? Would you rather be bricked up in cave for a year with nothing but the bare essentials needed to live ( i.e. canned soup, blanket but no pillow, no mattress, deck of cards, gas lantern, etc...)  with the person that you love the most in this world or would you rather be locked in a Walmart for a year (and you can use anything in it), but with the most annoying person that you know and hate?
These are completely unrelated to "would you rather" questions, but here are some pictures from Drew's work party yesterday. As nerdy as it is, we're both quite fond of backyard games, although I think it usually has more to do with the company and the outdoors than the actual game. We discovered Bocce ball on our honeymoon, and there's been no going back, so croquet was welcome entertainment.

*I have relatively flexible jobs and I get to spend a good amount of time blogging and making (slow) progress on my Master's project. Lately, I've also been checking this website every day at work for a new thing to love the world for. It's simple, but I do believe it makes me a happier, more grateful person for a few moments each day.

*We have free cable, and that means we've been able to watch as much basketball as we want this season from the comfort of our own couch. We haven't missed much of the NBA Finals, and it's been fun to have people over to watch the games with us. Drew is passionately rooting for King James and D-Wade and the rest of the Miami Heat.

*Westerns have also been a thing for us this summer, starting with True Grit and proceeding through six hours of Lonesome Dove, and we've really enjoyed the expansion in entertainment genres. Although human life was pretty undervalued in those days-they'd shoot you over just about anything-we like the characters and the heroics.

*In other entertainment news, we're both waiting anxiously for the final Harry Potter movie to emerge in theaters. We'll be in a tiny little coastal town in North Carolina when it does, so we're going to need to make a travel date out of it if we want to see it on a big screen. We started reading the books together (actually, Drew reads them out-loud to me) on our honeymoon, and we're now near the end of the 6th one, in some of the best parts of the story. Making it through the 7th book before the movie comes out is doubtful, but definitely still possible.

*Summer has finally arrived in Provo, and the beautiful weather has allowed us to spend some good time outside lately. Drew has been exercising a lot with some of his friends, and the outdoor track at BYU is finally an option. We also recently spent a Sunday afternoon listening to music in the park...

and yesterday we went swimming with Aaron and Jaimie.

*Being able to cut back on the big things (like cars and cable) means we have a few extra dollars sometimes for the little things. One of Drew's favorite things lately has been v-neck t-shirts. My mom gave him some right before we got married and they've become one of his favorite things to wear. And I'm currently excited about owning these shoes (in the Natural color), although I haven't actually purchased them yet. I've had two pairs of Simple shoes and they've both been amazingly comfortable, durable, and easy on my conscience.

*And then there's always the promise of what's coming. Drew is looking forward to life without summer school (he has one week left this term, and then he'll never have to endure summer school again). Next Saturday, to celebrate his freedom (and technically, our anniversary), we're going to watch the Real Salt Lake soccer team play D.C. United, followed by a post-game concert by OneRepublic. Here is a video of one of their many great songs.

And of course we're looking forward to our impending beach vacation and reunion with dearly missed family.

Life is good. :)
