The Lazy Man Iron Man
For some reason, Drew and I decided it would be fun? challenging? interesting? good for us? to complete the Lazy Man Iron Man being hosted by BYU this month. In traditional Iron Man competitions, participants swim 2.4 miles (79 pool laps), bike 112 miles, and then run a 26.2-mile marathon, in that order, without a break, in under 17 hours. Eh, no thanks. In a Lazy Man Iron Man, you complete all of the same events, but in any order, with as many breaks as you want, in under 4 weeks. Now that sounds much, much better.
Still, contrary to what its name might imply, this is no lazy feat. Our schedules and the need for rest dictate that all of our exercising has to occur during only four days of the week, resulting in some pretty hefty workouts. We designed a tentative plan to make sure we get all of those miles and laps in before April 6th, but we've already found that limited equipment and crowds in the gym will require some flexibility in our schedule - especially with the cycling since there aren't very many bikes and they're a popular attraction. Undoubtedly, our plan will change some, but hopefully only due to too many people getting healthy, and not any cases of the I-don't-wannas or I-can'ts or not-todays.
Here's our tentative schedule for the next four weeks--->
I've also started a running total at the top right of our blog to keep track of our progress.
And here's us, sweating it out in the new and improved Student Fitness Center:
Although Drew documented my rather puny weight-lifting today, it's not really a part of the Iron Man. We had a pretty good let's-put-healthy-pounds-on-Jessica exercise routine going before we started this little (or very, very long) Lazy Man adventure, and, in the interest of keeping that up and maintaining holistic fitness, we're still doing strength training along with the biking, running, and swimming.
I know the compensatory Lazy Man Iron Man t-shirt can't be sufficient motivation for such an undertaking; what in the world are we thinking?
